Every nurse gathers lessons through practice.

They come from routine shifts and difficult days, from moments when something didn’t feel right, from conversations that shifted our thinking, and from decisions that changed how we care. These lessons are valuable, yet they often stay with us quietly.
At A Nurse Like Me, we believe these insights deserve a shared space.
That belief is what shaped Insights from Practice.
What Is Insights from Practice?
Insights from Practice is an our new reflection series that features short, practical reflections written by nurses.
Each month focuses on a specific theme linked to patient safety, professionalism, and real-world nursing practice. Within that month, one Insight is published each week, offering steady, thoughtful learning rather than one-off posts.
Each contribution is a 150–250 word micro-article, grounded in experience rather than theory or academic writing.
Why This Series Exists
Much of nursing knowledge lives in experience; not only in policies, textbooks, or guidelines.
It lives in:
- recognising subtle changes before deterioration
- knowing when to escalate, even when numbers look “normal”
- learning from moments that didn’t go as planned
- reflecting on what practice teaches us over time
Insights from Practice exists to bring these lessons into the open, so nurses can learn from one another in a structured, respectful way.
The aim is simple:
to strengthen everyday practice through shared reflection.
How the Monthly Series Works
- Each month has one central theme
- Nurses submit short reflections related to that theme
- Selected Insights are published weekly throughout the month
- Contributors are credited by name, role, and specialty
- Insights are shared on the A Nurse Like Me website and social platforms
Submissions are ongoing. You may submit for the current theme or for upcoming months.
Current Theme: Early Warning Signs & Escalation
The opening theme focuses on an essential area of safe practice:
Early Warning Signs & Escalation
Many nurses can recall a moment when something felt wrong before it became obvious. A change in behaviour, breathing, or a concern raised by a patient or family member. These moments often shape how we practice moving forward.
Reflections that help others notice, pause, and act sooner are welcome.
Who Can Contribute
Insights from Practice is open to nurses at all stages, including:
- Student nurses
- Newly qualified nurses
- Experienced bedside nurses
- Nurse specialists, educators, and leaders
You do not need to be a writer.
You only need one lesson from practice that may help another nurse.
What Happens After You Submit
All submissions are reviewed. Selected reflections are lightly edited for clarity while keeping the contributor’s voice.
If your Insight is selected:
- It will be scheduled as part of the weekly series
- You will be credited as the contributor
- Your reflection becomes part of a growing nurse-led knowledge library
This is a professional feature designed to recognise nursing insight and lived experience.
