Some of the most important learning in nursing does not come from textbooks or study days. It comes from practice. From moments that make us pause, reflect, and adjust how we care for patients and families.
A detail noticed too late.
A conversation that changed our approach.
A decision that reinforced why safety and professionalism matter.
These experiences shape us as nurses. Yet too often, they remain personal lessons rather than shared learning.
At A Nurse Like Me, we believe nursing practice improves when we learn from one another.
Why Shared Learning Matters in Nursing
Healthcare is complex and constantly evolving. No single nurse has all the answers, but collectively, we hold a wealth of practical knowledge shaped by real situations.
When nurses share insights from practice, it helps us to:
- recognise early signs of deterioration
- communicate more effectively with patients and families
- escalate concerns with confidence
- improve the consistency and quality of care
Shared learning strengthens professional judgement and supports safer decision-making across teams.
Introducing Insights from Practice
Insights from Practice is a new monthly reflection series under A Nurse Like Me. It creates a structured space for nurses to share short, focused reflections drawn from everyday practice.
Each Insight is a 150–250 word reflection based on a monthly theme connected to patient safety, professionalism, and compassionate care. From January 2026, one Insight will be published each week.
This is not about academic writing or polished storytelling. It is about honest reflection and practical learning that can help another nurse think, notice, or act differently.
January Theme: Early Warning Signs & Escalation
We are beginning the series with a topic central to safe care: Early Warning Signs & Escalation.
Many nurses can recall a moment when something felt “not quite right”. A subtle change in a patient, a concern raised by a family member, or a pattern that didn’t fit the clinical picture.
Sharing these moments helps others recognise similar signs and respond earlier, with greater confidence.

Moving Forward Together
Improving care is not only about policies and procedures. It is also about reflection, accountability, and learning from one another.
Insights from Practice reflects what A Nurse Like Me stands for; professional growth, patient safety, and collective responsibility for the standard of care we provide.
When nurses share what practice has taught them, everyone benefits. Especially the patients we serve.
